At the start of 2019, I wanted to write a few short (ok, shortish) articles on how the everyday aspects of our lives can be pointers to the glory of God. In the Bible, there’s no separation between ‘spiritual’ and ‘secular’ or ‘everyday’ things. No – in fact, the complete opposite is true! Paul, in 1 Cor 10:31, uses the mundane everyday things of eating and drinking as a means by which we can glorify God (or not).
One of the questions that Lorna and I have asked on a number of occasions is how can our eating and drinking be ‘for the glory of God’? I want to suggest that being hospitable is a huge part of that (see here and here for more information on being hospitable).
However, I also think that taking time to think through what you eat is important. Food is fuel for the body and we’ve been called to use our bodies to glorify God. As a result, I want to look after it as best I can (I’m not talking about some freakish health obsession here) so that I can run hard and long for the glory of God. However, feeding yourself or a family on a budget is a bit of tough gig! As a result, I want to recommend a brilliant book called ‘How to feed your whole family a healthy balanced diet with very little money’ (not the shortest title in the world). It’s currently £10 on Amazon. The reason I think this is such a good book is that all the recipes are simple, using ‘everyday’ ingredients and it shows you the rough costs at the back! I love this book! Inanition, over the last 18 months, Lorna and I have also been developing a bit of a five-week menu for our family and we thought it might be helpful to share it with you so you can see how someone else is trying to eat a balanced diet in as simple a way as possible and for minimum cost (not all of the food may be your cup of tea!)! You can download the menu here
Please note: Neither Lorna nor I have any formal training in health or nutrition. The menu above is our simple attempt to feed our family a reasonably balanced and healthy diet without costing an arm and a leg.
